Traveling North on Maine Route 1

Journal page on 90 lb. Fabriano 9 X 12 cold press

Grateful for my holiday traveling north of Portland along the coast yesterday. This is a little thank you card to Route 1, which had very little traffic. The farmstand selling trees, the men hanging the wreaths, & the seacoast wreath were a wee bit off route 1 in Damariscotta. (Note: the post on which they're hanging the wreaths runs into the seacoast wreath, but, they are 2 separate images.)

While driving & enjoying the views on either side I'd be thinking: Payne's gray plus raw sienna plus indian red or hooker's green plus ultramarine violet plus raw sienna...In the end I used my violet instead of payne's gray. I'm loving thinking about warm & cool grays & if my hands have to be on the wheel, then I can mix them in my mind!

Some one just told me about their trip on the same day & time on the NJ Turnpike: bumper to bumper, jams & crowds at rest stops. Oh, so happy to be here, I am! I recently came upon the song "Simple Gifts" in the book Giving Thanks, edited by Katherine Paterson. An excerpt:

"...And when we find ourselves in the place just right
'Twill be in the valley of love & delight."

(Can I change "valley" to "coastline"?)

  2. You make me think of a musician who'd have the "absolute ear"translating every music into notes .You have the "absolute eye", translating everything you see into colors;I like very much your travel books, when you catch views from the world around.
I'm wondering, what do you feel when one of your drawings is sold: sad to see it going away? happy that someone likes it?..
Have a nice evening , dear Rita!

  4. Love the the way you've captured the town being decorated for Christmas and the wonderful way you think about the colours you will be using to put it all together on paper. Such a lot of detail in one sketch. Lovely

  5. Rita -- Your mention of simple gifts brought up memories of mine when I sat in a Shaker meeting house in KY and heard the beautiful song sang and danced by an older women that knew the song well. I think it is wonderful and try to follow its ways when possible. Here is the total song - "Simple Gifts" was written by Elder Joseph while he was at the Shaker community in Alfred, Maine. These are the lyrics to his one-verse song:
'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free
'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
    When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed,
To turn, turn will be our delight,
Till by turning, turning we come 'round right.

Your sketches of your Rt 1 trip also reminds me of a trip our family made (husband, me, four young kids and a white bulldog) made 40 years ago in a big red Ford van. Hippies of the road I guess. I was stunned by the historic housing stock and beauty of the place. Hope it hasn't changed very much. -- barbara

  9. Beautiful - this capture of a day, a drive, the scenes. Not at all surprised you sold another painting. Also: your influence has me, too, mixing colors in my mind --crazy! Didn't even know the names of these colors two months ago! And also, also: we saw that same car with the antlers!! xx

  10. I enjoyed reading your commentary on your color-blending thought process! I think the entire series of images is such a wonderful way to commemorate your trip. When we were at the waterfall last weekend, there was an informational placard consisting almost entirely of a reproduction of a page from Lewis and Clark's journal. It reminded me a lot of this type of collage you do, with many little sketches and descriptions. I've got my sketchbook now, and I've checked out both the nature journal books from my library, but I haven't managed to consistently find time for a daily sketchbook-type journal...yet.

  13. Bonjour Rita. How talented you are. I look at your drawings and can picture all the lovely and cheerful scenes you describe. I do not have a single artistic bone in my body, so I am impressed, truly. Oh, and félicitations for the sale of your painting! December is off to a good start for you.
